Guided by destiny's hand, Lazarus Cain was born as Genjirō Shōji, the only child of Japanese bank teller Kimiko Shōji and English attorney at law Gabriel Markwell, whom was studying foreign legal procedures abroad at the time. When Gabriel was instructed to return to London, a five-year-old Genjirō opted to stay behind in Japan so that he could receive a normal education. Despite his mixed ethnic heritage, he was blessed with his mother's looks and was able to fit in without fear of prejudice. Up until the age of ten, Genjirō's childhood was, for the most part, idyllic and without major flaws.[break][break]

His optimistic perpsective of the world took a sharp nosedive when Genjirō's mother fell deathly ill, where it was discovered she had terminal lymphoma and was only given a few more months to live. Genjirōs academic performance began to suffer due to the stress he felt of having to support Kimiko, which only grew worse as time passed. It was during the year 2034 that Genjirō illegally joined the Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force at the age of sixteen in the hopes that a government paycheck would give him the means to support his dying mother. Fate delivered Genjirō another blow upon his completion of boot camp: that Kimiko had passed away a week earlier.[break][break]

Stripped of the only thing that gave him a reason to continue his training, Genjirō had a crisis of faith and turned to the Christian Bible for answers. After four days of relentless study, he was unable to reach an answer he could be satisfied with, and Genjirō underwent a severe decline in health to the point where he excessively starved himself, a stint which landed him in the hospital for nearly three weeks. Here, he met Kazuhiro Amahashi, a medical student receiving an internship at the facility, whom cared for Genjirō during his stay. The two fell in love with each other after Lazarus was released from care, and this romance rekindled a flame within Genjirō's heart to continue pursuing his military career, now that he had someone he strongly wanted to protect.[break][break]

He quickly rose through the ranks of the Ground Self-Defense Force over the years until his rapid achievements became noticed by the higher brass. He was offered an opportunity to become a warrant officer, which Genjirō happily accepted. His commissioning into the upper echelons of the military units he proudly served for was further highlighted by a decision to train in iaijutsu, a Japanese martial art system that capitalized on the practitioner's precision, swiftness, and dexterity with a sword. At the age of 26, Genjirō Shōji became a face that commanded both fear and respect from his subordinates. [break][break]

Destiny, however, was not without a sense of irony. In lieu of his enormous military success, Genjirō was struck with yet more tragedy when it was announced that his lover Kazuhiro had contracted a terminal disease, just like his late mother Kimiko had suffered. Unbeknownst to Genjirō, Kazuhiro had signed a release form granting them permission to transfer his neural consciousness into an experimental biomechanical creature called a "Nephilim", of which Genjirō would be given sole authority to pilot due to its uinique compatibility requirements. His last wish for Genjirō was for him to proceed with enlistment into the Nephilim Project, so that he could use this final gift to protect the ones he cared about. In this way, Kazuhiro would always be at Genjirō's side, and that he could defeat illness before it had the chance to consume him.[break][break]
